PSYCHOLOGY- PERSONAL STATEMENT

Why? A question continuously asked throughout life, holding power over our decisions. What ultimately possessed you to do what you do? Our psyche is the key thing that preoccupies our existence; the inner workings of our brain are as yet, relatively unknown…This is what feeds my interest in the science of psychology and why I am determined to forge a career in the field.

We are constantly searching for reasons and answers in regard to our own and other people’s behaviour and how it impacts the various aspects of our life. I have always been interested in human behaviour, the question of nature or nurture and what makes one person respond differently to the next.

Having studied Psychology at A level, it has further fuelled my fascination into why we act/react the way we do. Learning about the cognitive and biological processes behind certain behaviours, I particularly enjoyed studying aspects of biopsychology. Exploring biological mechanisms and influences which underpin our actions, developing an interest into the scientific field of human anatomy and research techniques that have led to potential explanations for our behaviour. The topic was both interesting and thought provoking, altering the way I interpret a person’s actions due to the various elements which can drastically affect one’s personality. The course gave me the opportunity to develop my skills in research methods which have a relevance to all topics of psychology, as well as enhancing my analytical and research skills.

I am currently undertaking an Art Foundation course which has highlighted to me how creativity is heavily influenced by state of mind and influences perceptions. Art can be used as a means of self-expression, as well as a therapeutic tool to relieve stress and anxiety, questioning the cognitions which play a fundamental role in art. Freud’s impact on the theories of visual art and shaping of the creative psyche (Jung) suggests how unconscious motivations and experiences can manipulate subject matter, expression and meaning behind a work of art.  I have been questioning its impact on my own work; the interweaving of emotion and art and how it elicits reactions, but ultimately what inspires and motivates my expression and creativity, whether this is an unconscious drive, cognition or experience.

With the increase in a wide variety of mental health issues in society and a world that currently appears to be in the midst a global health disaster experiencing the effects of self-isolation and illness, many are finding themselves in crisis, leading to increase in suicide, depression, addiction and also in certain types of crime. These are all areas which I find truly fascinating. Whilst discussing crime and criminal behaviour with members of my family employed in the criminal justice system, I have acquired an interest into the causes of criminal behaviour and non-conformity. I particularly am drawn to the psychopathic personality and what turns people toward serious crime. Documentaries like ‘Inside the Criminal Mind’ and ‘Psychopath’ have inspired my curiosity in the field of forensic and criminal psychology.  By reading “The Dark Side of the Mind” by Kerry Daynes it has allowed me to comprehend the possible roles and further excites me to pursue this vocation.

My commitment to the course will allow me to develop my questioning and gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of the human mind and reasonings for our actions. Psychology at university will provide me with the possibility to work with others who share my interest in regard to human behaviour and provide a firm basis for a career in this field in the future.
