ART- PERSONAL STATEMENT

Drawing is a method I use to express ideas and thoughts, whether through a quick sketch or a detailed illustration. I am constantly motivated by various subjects and styles and am ambitious to improve my skills. My high attention to detail and precision ensures my work captures the accuracy and intricate features of my subject matter. Projects in my current Foundation Course have helped to broaden my interest; exploring methods to create a narrative and emotional response through the means of drawing, allowing me to explore and question how ideas are effectively communicated to an audience.

Equally I have recently found a love for digital art and have begun experimenting with Procreate and Affinity Photo. From doing so, amongst other things, I have been able to undertake commissions creating digital sport illustrations. I have now fully confirmed my interest in Graphic Design and I would now like to develop my skills and pursue this further on this degree, which will greatly extend my own practise as well as prepare me for a professional career in Graphic Design.

Creativity drives communication, and the ability to draw on ideas and thoughts through a visual image is a skill I’d like to develop further. I have begun experimenting with digital art intending to broaden my skills away from traditional drawing techniques, exploring alternative methods and style of working, developing my interest into graphic design and communication, aiming to further these skills using platforms like Photoshop and Illustrator which I would gain from a degree course.  Designers such as David Carson and Violaine and Jeremy, whose work combines photographic images, typography and illustrative drawings, have inspired my current studies through typographic, printmaking and illustrative projects, all of which I have enjoyed completing. Li Yong Hong, whose monochrome illustrations are incredible in their high detail and unique technique, largely influences that of my own work.

Aside from art, I have a fascination with psychology. Studying both at A level, has highlighted to me how creativity is heavily influenced by the state of mind and influences perceptions, questioning the cognitions which play a fundamental role in art. The interweaving of emotion and art and how it evokes reactions intrigues me, questioning how it impacts my own work and what inspires and motivates my own expression and creativity. By exploring the psychology of art and emotion through the means of portrait drawings has allowed me to research the elements which influence the perception and emotional response to a piece of work. It has allowed me to consider how my own work can be perceived by an audience.

A creative degree will not only offer me the opportunity to develop my artistic skill and teach me new techniques, it will help determine who I am as an artist and find my own unique style to become independent, professional and confident in my work. It will provide me with the preparation and experience to adapt to a career in the creative industry, as well as fuelling my passion for art and continue my education doing something I truly love.
